You'll also be provided with tips on preparing for earthquakes and other emergencies, making emergency plans, what to do when the shaking stops, and how to add a tsunami hīkoi to your drill if you are in a coastal area.

Do the ShakeOut

Wherever you are at 9.30am on 18 October 2018*, you can take part in the drill. Just Drop, Cover and Hold for up to one minute, and if you’re in a coastal area practise your tsunami hīkoi (evacuation).

* If you cannot do the drill at 9.30 am on 18 October 2018, you can choose a time to suit you within two weeks of the drill and still be counted.

Share the ShakeOut

We have lots of resources you can use to encourage others to sign up to ShakeOut. Download posters, factsheets, digital and social resources, scripts and more.

What is ShakeOut?

ShakeOut is held across the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake, Drop, Cover and Hold - and to practise a tsunami hīkoi (evacuation) if in a coastal area.

New Zealand ShakeOut was first held in 2012, and then again in 2015. Whether you’re doing the drill for the first time or you’ve done it before, taking part in New Zealand ShakeOut 2018 is as easy as 1-2-3!
